Some solar panels use solar tracking systems to follow the sun, significantly increasing energy output. 

The conventional wisdom is to place solar panels facing south. This is because the Sun always completes its annual orbit in the Southern Hemisphere for those of us who live in the Northern Hemisphere. As a result, the best method to date is to position solar panels facing south to capture the most sunlight overall. 

A solar panel's angle or tilt is also an important consideration. Geographic latitude determines the angle at which the solar panel should be placed to produce the most energy in a given year. For optimal annual power generation, the tilt angle of the solar panel should be set at the same as the geographic latitude. For example, if the solar panel is positioned at 50° latitude, the optimum tilt angle is also 50°. In general, the closer a solar panel is to the equator, the higher it should point. The closer the panel is to the poles, the more tilted toward the equator it is. 

In general, the solar industry agrees that these south-facing panels should be tilted between 30 and 40 degrees. This angle varies and is roughly equal to your latitude at home (how far north you are from the equator). 

The reason for this angle's uniqueness is that it ensures that sunlight falls on the panels at the optimal angle, producing the most energy. In northern latitudes, the angle of these lines allows snow to slide off solar panels more easily during the winter. 

Due to weather and environmental factors, the angle of solar panels can also affect power generation. Snow accumulation on low-slope panels in northern climates reduces or completely blocks sunlight from reaching the solar panel in winter. 

Some roofs are fully pitched, which allows installers to secure the panels against them and at an optimal angle to capture the sun's energy. Other types of roofs can be steep or flat.
